Thank you so much for hosting me today! This blog topic is very dear to me as the heroine in Beneath the Starry Sky, Tamara Johnston, has the autoimmune disease, Alopecia Areata.
Here are five facts you should know about this disease:
- Alopecia Areata is considered an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles as foreign invaders.
- In most cases, hair loss does not extend beyond a few bare patches, but can progress to a total loss of hair on the head or to the entire body.
- Alopecia Areata often begins in childhood and affects nearly two percent of Americans of both sexes, all ages and ethnic backgrounds.
- Currently there is no cure or drugs approved for its treatment.
- Alopecia Areata is not contagious, a painful disease, and doesn’t make patients physically sick. However, the social and emotional effects of this disease can be challenging, especially when patients are school-aged.
Through my story, I hope to increase awareness about this common, yet unfamiliar disease.

The charity I’m most passionate about is my local S.P.C.A., I try to donate there when I can. Also its where I got my first dog 🙂
I think its amazing that you are creating aware for Alopecia Areata, I didn’t even know about it until I read a previous blog of your on TRS.

I appreciate how you picked a subject that most people don’t know anything about but have no problem noticing people who have it and assume the worst of that person.
I have Crohn’s disease and that affects how you live parts of your life. There is the CCFA foundation that is working had for people with bowel diseases. The money and time that is donated is used for finding new medications and a cure. Not only that but they have many events to raise awareness and support.
Not only that but I support the local Humane Society. I have not adopted any of our dogs from them. We adopted them from Rescue groups and give donations there too.

Susan, I am happy to bring awareness to this disease. Where I’m from, the CCFA has definitely increased awareness for Crohn’s and Colitis. And a popular chain of frozen food stores regularly hosts charity BBQs for the cause.

The charities I’m passionate about are Breast Cancer Foundation and Diabetes Association.Both have affected family members.

My 5th grade teacher had it, I remember him wearing a wig and kids talking bad things about him behind his back – which I disapproved of, cause he was a great guy, great teacher and I thought the kids were just mean.

Charities I support? I grew up in a military household so I am all about supporting active duty soldier’s families and vets. I work with low income families so I’m big on literacy. I also support my local church with its missionaries and benevolence funds.

I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata. A dermatologist ran a few test and confirmed this through a skin biopsy. The test showed an abnormal concentration of immune cells in the affected area. Soon after I was prescribed with topical steroid which comes in the form of cream. Since the treatment showed very little effect, I was later prescribed with steroid jabs. This method showed some improvement, however it was short term as the hair that grew fell off after a few weeks.
