I’ve spent quite a bit of time reading, while also writing, lately since I won’t have a high-speed connection till mid-June, which impedes me from doing needed research for what I’ve been working on. Most of the books that I’ve read lately have been via the Amazon Kindle.
I have to say that some of the stuff that I’ve come across on the Kindle sometimes feels as if it’s not up to par. I mean, my work might not be that great but some of the short stories that I’ve read seem somewhat lacking.
There’s one story, Shapeshifter’s Craving by Lee Pearce. Initially, I thought the book was some sort of romance novel. It’s not. It’s literary porn. Admittedly, while reading it, I felt it lacked some sort of plot – like the book had no substance, at all. It was just full of sex, sex, and more sex that wasn’t really believable. And this is just one of the many books that I’ve come across these last few weeks, mind you.
So that left me wondering, are there a lot of people who tackle self-publishing but don’t really make the effort to really make their work sound out? People who just throw shit together in hopes of just getting something, or nothing, for their work?
I get that we, author’s want to get our work out there – that we want to be seen and heard for what we do. Personally, I think that a person should take the time to flesh out their story. To give it substance. To make it believable for anyone who wishes to read it. Throwing words together without really thinking about the meaning of your work – what you want your readers to get from what they’re reading, it makes it seems as what they’re looking at isn’t worth having purchased it in the first place. It also makes a person wonder if that author’s future work would be worth looking into.
