Review: Child Of The Sacred Earth – Alicia Michaels
From the moment she was born, Jocylene’s path in life was sealed. Banished to Earth, she’s lived a harsh life, but she’s determined in making the most of the cards life has dealt her. In her mind, she aspires for a better life, one where she can finally acknowledge the powers she’s kept under lock and key. Though, she knows that’s just wishful thinking.
Unwittingly summoned back to the realm of Fallada via the help of Rothatin Longspear, a mysterious, yet quite intriguing Faerie, Jocylene soon realizes there’s more to the world than she’d ever known. To her dismay, she finds out that she’s destined to save the kingdom itself. The thought of doing so is mind-boggling. Such a feat is impossible, she surmises. She barely knows of what her powers contain, and she’s not even trained in the art of battle.
Determined to learn as much as she can about the new world that now surrounds her, Jocylene comes to the realization that she has a lot to live up to. Not to mention that the queen of Fallada wants her dead at all cost. Though she cannot fathom as to why that is, she vows not to fall prey to her fears. Sadly, that’s easier said than done.
Pulled in every direction by those she’s come to trust, Jocylene does her best to understand the secrets surrounding her past. She can sort of understand why things happened the way they did, though forgiveness for those who have done her wrong is a little hard to come by. With war gathering on the horizon, she knows she needs to learn everything she needs to know as fast as possible. She’s quite grateful for the help she receives every step of the way. If she’s to succeed in vanquishing the evil coming her way, she’ll need to fully trust herself and those she deems trustworthy in the long run.
I absolutely loved this book. It’s a wonderful twist on all things fairytale. Alicia did a wonderful job in setting the stage for each of the books in the series. Granted, I started reading the second book in the series first, but it also stands as a standalone novel, so you don’t really get lost in the details surrounding the realm itself. You can bet that I’ll be catching up with the first book soon enough. Can’t wait to see what happens next with the lost kingdom of Fallada.
