#Review: Beyond The Red Door – E. H. James
The Starke house . . . a grim reminder of the secrets the place holds within its walls. Years ago, Max Jensen set foot inside the place. To everyone’s dismay, he never made it out. No one knows if he’s still alive. Nor do they know what truly happened to him. Many assume he ran away. That he was just tired of the life he led. There are those, however, who know that is not the case. There’s more to the house than meets the eye, and Jesse Miller is determined in finding out the secrets it holds inside.
Picking up where book one leaves off, Beyond The Red Door delves deeper in the story behind the Starke house and the circumstances behind Max’s disappearance. While people assumed that he left his entire life behind, we all know that Max wasn’t the type to walk away from anything. He’d play by the twisted rules set before him in order to ensure his continued existence.
The house claimed its next victim from the moment Max walked through its doors, intent on becoming more than the inanimate object it should have remained. Though most might assume that the characters introduced within this story are the ones telling the story itself, we have to give credit where credit is due. The Starke house is the one pulling the story’s strings, a sure fact the author makes sure to show with every turn of the page.
Not everyone believes in the paranormal, but there are a good many in life who do. It is possible for malicious entities to take full control of a place and manipulate it in such a way that it’s hard for people to set foot in it. I know because as a child I used to live in such a place. The spirits inhabiting that place did everything possible to drive us out. I still don’t know how my family and I survived there for as long as we did.
Delving deeper into the secrets of Starke house, Beyond The Red Door opens the reader’s eyes to what it’s like for a malicious entity to thirst for a life that was promised to it. Spirits are just like us. They yearn to live a life that’s been forbidden to them so they do everything possible to slip into that very realm. For Max and the others, the house and the entity that lives inside its walls took control of the situation from the moment they set foot inside. What will become of the place as time goes by, we’ll truly never know. Not until we dive deeper into the rest of what this series has to offer.
Synopsis:
Fifty years to the day Max Jensen walked into the Starke house, Jesse Miller is throwing a party.
Jesse wants to go down in high school history as the kid to remember. Only problem is, he may just get his wish. If he thought throwing a party in the long abandoned house of a serial killer would do it, then he would be right. But what happens that night at the old Starke house isn’t something you want to remember…not if you ever want to sleep again. Performing a mock ceremony to raise Starke from the dead proves to be a mistake of monumental proportion. And by the time Jesse realizes he is in over his head, he must now worry about keeping that same head on his shoulders.
What would you do if the only way out was to go Beyond the Red Door…into the very mouth of hell?
