Is It Working As Intended?
Let’s say you’re like me – still new to this Indie Author thing. You’ve set up the needed platforms to promote your work – Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, and several other sources. You’ve created a blog and started posting whenever possible. Bit.ly has become your best friend as it is handy whenever you need to shorten links. Overall, you’re making friends and establishing that much needed online presence, although you know that you’ve a long way to go.
Everything seems to be going well and you’re quite content with how things are going, so far. You do your best to keep up with everything as each day goes by and you’re thinking that things are where they should be. Nothing seems out of order and you’re sure that you’ve done everything possible in making others aware of you and your writing. But have you done enough?
Sure, some have been sharing the links you’ve been providing. More and more are reading your work. But are you truly getting things across to a bigger audience? Take a moment and look around. On your website. On your blog. On whatever media that you’re personally using to get things out there. Does everything still seem to be in order?
Up until today, I thought so, too. I honestly thought I was doing things the way I’m supposed to. The way things have been suggested to us writer’s. But I was missing something. I just didn’t really know it.
Sonia Rumzi, a fellow writer, and someone who’d I’d like to call a friend, asked me via a tweet earlier as to where my blog sharing buttons were. I confess that I thought that activating the AddThis option when creating a post was enough for sharing. Came to find out that it’s not. Ironically, although the option is active, the button never shows on my posts. Maybe it’s something to do with WordPress. Maybe not. But still, it doesn’t show.
I took some time tonight to remedy my social-media sharing options here on my blog. Took me exactly two hours to get everything running. Did this all via WordPress Plugins. I run my blog via WordPress.org, btw, so all of the plugins that they offer may not work with WordPress.com. Initially, I’d tried some HTML coding but for some reason it wasn’t working well with the blog theme that I’m using.
Alas, my blog is finally social-media friendly. So you see, sometimes, even though we think something looks fine and that it’s working as intended, it sometimes isn’t entirely up-to-par. Sometimes, all it takes is just that one person to make you see the bigger picture so that you can make things even better.
