Author Interview: Avery Flynn
Hi, Avery. Welcome to my blog. We’re pleased to have you here.
Would you be kind enough to introduce yourself to us?
*waves*
Hi! I’m Avery Flynn: writer, smart ass and lover of chocolate. I love garish shoes. If I could drool over one fictional vampire it would so be Eric from True Blood. My ideal day would be spent on the couch with a book and a bag of Oreo cookies.
How long have you been writing?
Since before I could spell. My dad gave me a powder blue Brother typewriter when I was in grade school and I spent way too much time writing giberish stories about my stuffed animals.
We’d love to know a little more about your book. What is it about?
Passion Creek is a steamy, adventure romance about opposites attracting.
Uptight history professor Sam Layton may have the abs of a movie action hero, but he stopped believing in the joy of adventure a long time ago. However, when a one-night stand with a tattooed bombshell leads to a treasure map for the long-buried Rebecca’s Bounty, the call to action is too strong to ignore.
All Las Vegas cocktail waitress Josie Winarsky wants to do is paint. But when she lands smack dab in the middle in a mob plot, she has to push aside her dreams to find a treasure in Dry Creek, Nebraska and save her family from harm. With Sam at her side and a Vegas loan shark on her tail, the treasure she finds turn out to be much more valuable than emeralds and rubies.

I see that you mostly write Erotica/Romance. Are these the only genre’s you prefer to write for? Or have you experimented with others?
I love it steamy, it’s true. However, I’ve written in several other genres including a steampunk short story, which you can read for free at http://waterworldmermaids.com/2011/10/victory-garden-part-one-by-avery-flynn/.
When did you first come up with the idea for your story?
Sam has been in my mind since I wrote the first book in the Layton Family series (Temptation Creek). I love a strong-and-slightly-grumpy type so I knew Sam needed his own story. It took me a while to dream up his perfect fit Josie Winarsky. But she popped up in the second book in the series (Seduction Creek) and I knew I’d found Sam’s girl.
Tell us a little more about your characters and the setting of your book.
Passion Creek takes place in Dry Creek, Nebraska in the dead of winter but Josie and Sam are about to heat this small town up. I like to describe Sam as the Adam Cartwright of the family. He’s that guy you couldn’t help but crush on because he was so quiet and self contained. Josie is a free spirit. If she thinks it, she says it. If she wants it, she finds a way to make it happen. She is an eternal optimist.
Which one of your characters is your favorite?
I have to go with the Layton family matriarch, Glenda Layton. She is always in her kids’ business and wants nothing more than to have a bunch of grandbabies to spoil. Also, she bedazzles neon green. You have to love a woman who does that.
What inspires you the most to write?
I just love it. When everything is going right and the words are flowing, I can fall into a story while writing it as much as I can reading one of my favorite books.
Do you have any current projects lined up that you’re at liberty to tell us about?
Actually, I’m working on a fast-paced romantic suspense about a fashion blogger and a private investigator who wouldn’t know a peep toe from a kitten heel. Also, there’s one more Layton Family book in the series. I couldn’t leave goofy Chris without a love of his own.
Do you have any recommendations for books that you think the blog’s readers may enjoy?
Oh yes. My friend Robin Covington has a phenomenal book called A Night of Southern Comfort. Also, there’s Jenny Lawrence’s Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, it’s non-fiction but laugh-out-loud funny.
When thinking about writing new material, do you outline your story or do you just go with the flow and see where it takes you?
I have to put together some kind of outline. I am not a fly-by-the-seat-of-your pants girl.
Do you have any tips, or thoughts, that you would like to offer to the blog’s readers?
- Eat Girl Scout Thin Mints frozen.
- Go ahead and buy the obnoxious pair of shoes even if you don’t know where you’d ever wear them.
- Good books and bubble baths go together like peanut butter and jelly.
So there you have it, everyone, a lovely interview with a very lovely author, Avery Flynn. We hope that you’ve enjoyed learning more about her. I wish her the best of success with her book, and with those to come.

About The Author:
Avery Flynn is a pseudonym for the author who, at least for now, prefers to remain behind the scenes. She believes having Avery as her alter ego is a very good thing because, as she says, “Pen name Avery is way cooler than me. Her favorite color is hot pink. She drinks single malt scotch on the rocks. She loves the Argentinean tango and stays at Iceland’s Ice Hotel.”
Author Avery has been writing since she was a child and her father gave her a baby blue Brother typewriter. She couldn’t read but nonetheless wrote numerous stories about her stuffed animals in gibberish. She hasn’t stopped since, though she maintains that her spelling has gotten much better and she now prefers to write in English.
Today she’s enjoying her own happily ever after with her dashing husband, three crazy kids and two arthritic dogs. She dreams of one day having a floor-to-ceiling library à la Beauty and the Beast and is working to perfect the coffee IV drip.
