A swift knock sounded upon the door of the room.
“There’s no time!”
“Abby . . .”
She growled with frustration and took a step toward him. Abby wrapped her hands around his head, yanking it up so that they were seeing eye to eye. A gasp of surprise slid past Sam’s lips as he eyed the crimson streaks marring beautiful blue color of Abby’s eyes.
“W-What’s happened to you?”
“Experiments. I . . . I took a chance in contacting you. Wasn’t sure if this would work.” The knocks on the door were no longer hesitant in nature. “You have to go to the source.”
“But-”
“Listen!” she cried as the door shook on its foundations. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll get out of this, I promise you.”
“Abby, I don’t-” he began as a hairline fracture appeared across the door’s surface.
“The source, Sam. You have to find it. You have to set her free.”
His frown deepened. “Who?”
Abby glanced at the door as a hand broke through the wood, inching toward the doorknob. “You know who!”
“I-”
She turned to face him, pressing her lips against his. “Please! Do as I say!”
“I can’t leave you there!”
“You must!”
“Abbessé!”
“Find her, Sam!” she cried.
She kissed him one last time, curling her right hand into a tight fist. A bright light enveloped him as her fist collided with the curve of his left cheek. Her troubled eyes was the last thing he saw as the darkness claimed him.
