I can’t stand spam. I honestly can’t. When it arrives in email, it can’t be helped. It’s one of the unfortunate side effects of hopping around online and you’ll encounter lots of it.
Ironically enough, I encountered a different sort of spam via Twitter recently. Mind-boggling, isn’t it? It’s the last place that you’d expect it.
I’m not talking about the usual spam, either. No, it’s the kind that makes you want to rip your hair out as you sit there watching your screen fill up with repeated tweet after tweet of the same link pointing you to that person’s blog or website to read a recent post about this or that.
Directing someone to your site/blog on Twitter so that they can read a new post about something you’d like them to read is all fine and dandy, but if you have to spam that link to the blog post/site every minute it kind of puts me off and eventually, I will unfollow you.
I ended up unfollowing someone on Twitter because of the incessant spam. It wasn’t that person wasn’t great, because he is. It was just that all his tweets were virtually non-stop linkage. I don’t think I’ve ever really seen him engage his followers unless it included pointing them to a link to one of his posts after tweeting about said post just moments before. And if he did, it was always minimal.
I myself share things on my twitter, but I don’t spam. I retweet other people when something of interest catches my eye that I think others would like to know about, too. But I also engage my followers and those that I follow. I chat whenever possible and establish friendships with those that I meet.
So it begs the question, has anyone else encountered this same thing? Did you end up unfollowing the person? Were they aware of the fact that the spamming bothered you or that it would bother others in the same fashion?
It would be nice if others were more considerate of those following them. Instead of spamming. Engaging your fan base is far better than having them unfollow you due to unnecessary linkage. If you have to link something, do it moderately and in a well manner. Posting it every minute to every five minutes will only put people off to what you have to offer.
