Dealing with the ups and downs of the Crimson Alliance, Grim Jack never expected how much work would go into leading a new faction from the moment he’d gained access to creating one. Adversities keep coming at him from every turn, more than he’d ever expected. Determined to do his people proud, he’s thrown himself into many a tricky situation. Each time, he’s come out on top. Barely, anyway.

Presented with a new set of challenges, he soon realizes how much has gone over his head. Alliances are hanging by fragile threads, and everyone’s existence now lies in question. If he, Osmark, and the rest of the world are to succeed in setting all wrongs to right, they’ll have to all work together in order to achieve an end to their own means. Doing so is easier said than done. Most especially when all is not as it seems.

The more I dive into the world of Viridian Gate Online, the more it leaves me wanting to discover the secrets hidden within its depths. James has created such an intriguing and immersive world that caters to the gamer in me. Every word I read opens up my imagination to the complexity of the world he’s created. It also broadens the images I’ve created in my mind of both the world and the characters that inhabit VGO.

Book 7 picks up where Doom Hammer left off, catapulting us into the plight left behind when Grim Jack and his friend succeeded in finding the elusive artifact. Mind you, they’re also dealing with the implications of the discoveries they’ve made when it comes to VGO’s Overminds. Each secret they uncover opens up new cans of worms, many of which Jack and his friends aren’t sure they’ll be able to overcome when the time to do so arrives.

While Osmark has created a haven for Earth’s inhabitants, I don’t think he took into account what life would be like within the game itself. To VGO’s inhabitants, Jack, Osmark, and the rest of the Earth’s population are nothing more than outsiders. In order to survive, they must cater to the NPC’s every whim and the Overminds themselves, else they’ll flounder exactly where they’ve been standing.

This is an avid theme that James has made prevalent throughout the series itself. From the moment I started this series, I knew it wouldn’t be like anything I’ve ever read. The author has taken what is essentially a video game and adapted it into the written form. He’s done it in such a way, though, that you don’t focus on the fact that it’s a video game. It’s a story that is so much more.

I’m sitting on pins and needles while we wait for what comes next for this extraordinary series. If you haven’t caught up on it yet, I strongly recommend you do. James is, and always will be, an author to keep an eye on. I look forward to what’s to come for Viridian Gate Online.

Not even gods are safe from the power of the fabled Doom-Forged weapon.

Grim Jack didn’t set out to be the leader of Eldgard’s united armies, but with dungeons falling one by one and hordes of Vogthar pouring into the material plane, it’s up to him to save both citizens and travelers from digital destruction.

His doomsday weapon will take him straight into the heart of Morsheim, but once there, even the combined might of the Empire and the Crimson Alliance might not be enough. He’ll have to uncover secrets buried for millennia just to get within striking distance of a death god gone mad, and the choices he’ll make will change him and the world forever…
