Review: The Summoner’s Tale – Victoria Danann
For centuries, Baka has lived the life of a vampire. The choice of such a life was imposed upon him against his will, but he’s made do with the injustices he’s suffered. Although he’s detested the nature of what he’s become, the moment the Order of the Black Swan offered him a chance to regain his mortality seemed like a blessing in disguise.
Baka has made use of his time by assisting the Order whenever possible. With the beautiful Heaven McBride on-board to lend him a hand, things have never been boring. Heaven does her best to keep him at arm’s length, something he wishes he could change. He can’t quite understand as to why she seems as a threat since he’s done nothing to make her dislike him. Still he knows there’s a chance for him to make her happy, but only if she’ll let him.
When Baka suddenly disappears, Heaven tries to tell herself that perhaps it’s nothing to be worried about. Deep inside, she knows that’s not true. Something is wrong, and she can feel it to the very depths of her soul. The rest of the Order keeps telling her that Baka’s nightly activities are normal for him. To them, his disappearance is nothing to be worried about, but she thinks otherwise.
Acquainting herself with Baka’s history, Heaven soon comes to understand the man that lies behind the toughened exterior she sees every day. She comes to the realization that perhaps she’s been too hard on her partner, and no longer doubts that he’s in trouble. She knows she’ll need to do everything possible if she’s to find him in time before anything else happens to him. The question is, how can she do that when no one else believes that he’s in trouble in the first place?
This was another lovely addition to the Black Swan series. Granted, I still need to catch up on book two. I sort of read this one out of order, but plan on rectifying that little blunder soon. With that said, I think Victoria did a great job in crafting Baka’s unique history throughout the book, and weaving it alongside the unique happenstances that occur throughout the book with the other members of the Order. A titillating and quite heart-warming ride, we get to see the man, Baka, truly is. The fact that he’s finally able to find the love of his life also seals the deal. I so look forward to what comes next in this wonderful series.
A secret society, a witch, a psychic, vampires, modern day knights, heroes, elves, fae, assassins from another dimension, and fairytales come together where emotions intersect. Two souls, joined by a mystical bond, separated by distance, must simultaneously struggle through pain and darkness in an ultimate confrontation with character and an ultimate struggle for life proving that true love waits patiently through lifetimes and finds courage to survive. Even in the strangest places. Even when you’re least expecting it. Even when you’re far, far from home.
About The Author:
For the past fourteen years, Victoria has illustrated and authored Seasons of the Witch calendars and planners for 7th-House.com.
Though works of fiction are a departure for me, I have had this series simmering on the back burner of her mind for years. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch, I play rock music and manage one of Houston’s premier R&B/Variety/Pop bands.
This series will include some of my actual experience in the paranormal with fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing “metaphysician”, but most of the material is fantasy.
