Review: The Howling Heart – April Bostic
For as long as she can remember, Paige Donovan has been plagued by strange dreams. She sees things she can’t understand, and there’s always one permanent fixture in her dreams – a wolf. Deep inside, she’s known that her parents know of what’s been happening to her. Sadly, they want to pretend that she’s as normal as they come. In their minds, there’s nothing wrong with her.
Paige does her best to ignore her dreams and the strange occurrences going on around her. She’s determined in getting to the top of the ladder now that she’s in college. Her hopes and aspirations are what drive her every step of the way. Part of her knows she should ignore her dreams. That she shouldn’t give them much credit. Yet the more things get complicated, the more she realizes just how much she doesn’t know about the world around her.
Her life takes a different turn when she inherits her father’s cabin in the Colorado Rockies. The cabin has always held good memories for her, despite the fact that strange things happened to her there. An unexpected accident soon sends her further over the edge. She finds herself ensconced in a community along the Black River. The place feels like home, though she won’t admit it. For all intents and purposes, everyone looks normal to her. But they hold one tiny secret. They’re werewolves.
As the secrets of her past soon slide into place, Paige realizes that she’s always known just how different she is. The wolves have always surrounded her, much to her parents chagrin. They’ve been her comfort during those moments when she found herself alone and looking for a friend. Torn between wanting to further her career and remaining in Riley’s arms, she knows she has a difficult decision to make. Will she stay with Riley and learn the ways of his people? Or will she go back to the life she’s led up until now, never to see him ever again?
The Howling Heart was a refreshing take on all things werewolves. April took the lore and spun it in such a way that allows you to vividly imagine the world she’s created. Paige’s life has never been quite normal. The wolves and her dreams prove that. Though she’s as determined as ever to make the most of the world she lives in, she can’t deny the fact that she’s different. Her heart and instincts have always led her to the one place she’s needed to be. A truly intriguing fairy-tale, this is one story you’ll definitely be reading time and again.
