TAW ButtonPhaedra Michaels’ life is never boring. As a practicing small town psychologist, she’s had her share of up’s and down’s. Working at the hospital’s psychiatric ward, she’s come across of slew of lost souls. Though she’s done her best to help them through their various ordeals, it disheartens her that she’s unable to help a good many. Until the moment she discovers a strange book lying on her doorstep. It’s then that everything changes.

Determined to make sense of the book itself, Phaedra dives head-first into a world she knows nothing about. Granted, her doing so is more of a sense of curiosity rather than actual practice. She knows she shouldn’t delve in the occult, but the lure of it all draws her in like a moth to a flame. The more she casts spells, the more she yearns to explore the dark side of the supernatural world.

For a time, everything is fine and dandy. In her mind, everything is going just the way she wants it too. Sometimes, though, things are too good to be true. Practicing magic always comes with a price, most especially when someone isn’t quite knowledgeable in what they’re doing. As a dark cloud settles upon the town, Phaedra soon realizes that she’s in way over her head. She’s inadvertently unleashed a force that’s to be reckoned with. If she’s to succeed in vanquishing it, she’ll need to place her trust in those she never thought of trusting before. Only then, can they lay to rest an evil determined in gaining the upper hand.

TAW BCThe Accidental Witch looks like it’s to be set up as a series. The story’s premise is definitely unique, one I enjoyed very much. Granted, it’s not often that I read stories about demons and witches like this. Jessica has crafted a world full of darkness and decay. A world where magic isn’t always what we think it is. Sometimes, it can get the best of us, even with the best intentions at heart. I look forward to more of Phaedra and the rest of the guild in the future. Thanks for a great read!

Synopsis:

Phaedra Michaels is a small town psychologist who is beginning to lose hope. Two of her patients at the local hospital in Dismal, Alabama have just killed themselves, she’s still reeling from her divorce and what turned out to be a disastrous marriage, and her father has died, leaving her without any notion of who her real mother is.

Just as Phaedra decides to commit herself to a serious drinking problem and an eating disorder, or two, a mysterious spell book arrives in the mail. Feeling desperate, Phaedra uses it to cast spells to save her fading patients. Suddenly, good things start happening. Phaedra’s patients begin to get better and she even starts dating the sexy doctor from the hospital.

Phaedra is so happy she doesn’t notice the small things that start to go wrong in Dismal, or the dark creatures slithering out of the shadows near her house. When Phaedra finally realizes her spells have attracted every card-carrying demon from hell, she has no choice but to accept help from a slightly nerdy, 500 year-old warlock with a penchant for wearing super hero T-shirts and a knack for getting under Phaedra’s skin. Now, if only she could get the hang of this witch thing, she might be able to save her town.
