Review: Running into the Darkness – D. A. Bale
Samantha Bartlett has done her best to run away from her past. She lost her parents at an early age, and has fought to retain a sense of who and what she is. Her grandmother has done her best to raise her in every way possible, something she’s very much grateful for. Her rebellious nature, however, keeps her from truly appreciating the little things, and all her grandmother has done for her.
When her grandmother unexpectedly passes, and secrets of her past come to light, Samantha soon realizes that she has no choice but to confront the life she left behind. Something about the situation doesn’t sit well with her, and she’s intent on finding out what’s wrong. Delving deeper into things she could never imagine, she begins to understand that there’s more to her past than she ever knew. As the evidence mounts, so do the attempts of her life.
One such attack drives her into the hands of the Elite, a secret underworld organization intent on using her as an end for their own means. To Samantha’s surprise, she agrees to their demands. She’s the needed key to bringing down the most powerful man in the United States, and she’ll do what she can to help the organization, albeit a tad unwillingly.
Immersing herself in the task at hand, Samantha is soon given a new name and identity. If she’s to succeed in carrying out her mission, she’ll need to become the woman the organization wants to her to be. Deep inside, she knows that what they want her to do is hard to bear. Doing so will take an avid part of her away, one she isn’t sure she wants to give up. She knows that if they’re to finally put an end to the madman’s machinations, she’ll need to do everything possible to overcome her own adversities. Sadly, there’s two things she didn’t count on – Joe Roberts and the stirrings of her own heart.
A very engrossing read, Running Into The Darkness is a wonderful beginning to what promises to be a very thrilling series. I honestly enjoyed the book very much, and found myself caught up in Samantha’s world. She’s had to deal with a lot in such a short time, but her resilience and determination have pulled her through the toughest of spots. I did note quite a few places where the punctuation could be tightened up a little bit, though. Overall, it’s a great read, and I look forward to what comes next for the series itself.
