Review: Reluctant Protector – Nana Malone
Cassie Reeser spent most of her childhood trying to overcome the throes of sickness plaguing her at every turn. With the help of her father’s legacy, her brother, Peter, has done his best to care for her in hopes of finding a cure that would allow him to remove her ailments. His vast scientific knowledge, along with Cassie’s will to live, has given him the opportunity to make her better. Yet the price she must pay in order to be healthy is one she never saw coming.
Her brother has been able to unlock paranormal powers within her in hopes of creating the perfect soldier. The genetic experiments he’s conducted have been taking its toll and all Cassie yearns for is to be free. This, unfortunately, is easier said than done. Try as she might, Peter has found ways in which to bring her back to the labs in order to continue with his sordid experiments every time she’s tried to set herself free.
This time, though, will be his last time doing so. Cassie, determined to escape once and for all, knows she’ll need to sever her familial ties to Peter completely. While having to do so doesn’t exactly sit well with her, she also knows she can no longer remain as one of his lab rats. Freedom is just around the corner. She just has make sure she achieves it.
When she comes across Seth Adams while trying to elude capture, she realizes he’s her saving grace. Yet she never imagined the consequences that would ensue because of her decision to protect him from her captors after he becomes privy to what she is and what she can do. Inadvertently bonding him to her, Cassie soon understands that she needs him in more ways than one. Seth is determined to help her with the mission she’s set out to complete in hopes of making sense of the changes occurring within him.
Setting off on a journey to set all wrongs to right, Cassie wonders if she’ll be able to achieve her goals. She also finds herself feeling things for Seth she never knew possible. Yet part of her refuses to trust what she’s feeling. Regardless of this, she accepts the fact that Seth is there to stay.
As their discovery about one another and the world around them deepens, Cassie realizes that time is running out. If her plan is to succeed, she and Seth will need to stay one step ahead of Peter at every turn. Alone, she knows she’s able to fend for herself in order to survive. Yet with Seth, she also understands that they’re a force to be reckoned with; a fact her nemesis will soon be privy to as they strive to achieve the mission that has been set forth before them from the beginning.
I was totally hooked from the moment I began reading this book. Granted, it’s not that long of a story, but the fast pace and overall tone of the book keeps the reader glued to every page. Nana did a wonderful job in creating the world around each of her characters. So much so, that it leaves a person wanting to know more about the world itself. I look forward to reading more of this series when the time comes.
For five years, Cassie Reeser has been her brother’s personal lab rat. Peter’s experiments have made her a stronger, faster, better human. And she’s not the only one – he’s been experimenting on others as well. For five years, escape has eluded her. Until now. When she finds out he plans to sell her as a human weapon she knows it’s now or never. To make her escape she’ll sacrifice family bonds and leave behind the one person who’s ever helped her. Cassie’s learned to shrink from kindness and to never trust anyone. She knows the day Peter finally captures her will be the day she dies. To elude her brother and save the others, she’ll have to risk her body and her heart. What she doesn’t expect is a chance at a normal life.
Seth Adams is used to sifting through lies to find the truth. As a former war correspondent he knows what evils lurk in the world. When he finds Cassie hiding out in his car trunk, her story sounds like a fantastical dream. But, before long, he witnesses firsthand what she’s talking about when they’re attacked by a group of Peter’s soldiers. As a result, he goes through his own transformation into a super human and realizes the extent of what Cassie is running from. Cassie might not think she needs his protection, but he’ll die before he lets her brother have her back.
About The Author:
Nana’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she borrowed from her cousin on a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana at a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.
Waiting for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana, meantime works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is. Though, until that ninja job comes through, you’ll find her acting out scenes for hubby and puppy while catching up on her favorite reality television shows in sunny San Diego.
