Review: Pyxis – K. C. Neal
Corinne Finley is a regular kid, eager to fit in at school and quite content with the life she leads. There’s nothing extraordinary about her or the world she lives in. Or so she thinks.
Trying to forget about her almost-boyfriend’s betrayal, she immerses herself in her school work as well as her after-school job. Giving as much time as possible to her best friend, Angeline, and the family around her, she’s happy with the way things are going. Well, aside from still pining for Mason, of course. Try as she might, she can’t deny her feelings for him.
When people start acting differently with her at the school bake sale, Corinne wonders just what has brought about the change. She hasn’t done anything different with her cooking. At least, not that she can remember. When Angeline brings to light the fact that she did indeed do something different, she realizes that what she’d thought were her grandmother’s ordinary food dyes were something else entirely.
Her dreams soon start showing her things that she can’t quite understand. Part of her knows that danger is around the corner, but from who or what? When Mason starts having the same dreams, Corinne begins to question what is going on.
Embarking on a quest for answers, they never imagined that they were part of another world – one similar to the one they live in but full of magic and even more secrets. Mason promises to keep her safe. To always protect her from those that seek to do her harm. They can’t deny the fact that their feelings for one another are growing. Nor can they set aside the urge to know more about who, and what, they really are.
I honestly enjoyed this story. It was truly intriguing and made me want to read the next installment for the series. While there were a couple typos here and there, I didn’t let that detract from getting into the story.
The world that K. C. has created is quite vivid and allows the reader to get caught up in each of the characters lives. It’s one of those story that leave you thinking ‘what if’. All in all, it’s a great read. Others will enjoy it also. I know I did!
