#Review: Pie And Other Brilliant Ideas – Karen Pokras Toz
Georgie Harris has gone through so many changes in her short life that she no longer knows what is up or what is down. To make matters worse, she’s learned that she has to give up the one thing she loves to do the most–ballet dancing. As if that’s not enough, she’s moving far away from her best friend. In her mind, things can’t get any worse than that.
Determined to make the most of the unexpected situation, Georgie looks forward to seeing her grandmother. She’s also excited about the fact that she’ll get to present her with her newest pie concoction. If there’s anything she knows how to do best, it’s dancing and baking pies. These two things have given her delight in life, and she’ll do everything possible to try to do both. Granted, dancing is out of the picture right now, but that doesn’t mean it has to be forever.
During a recent trip to see her grandmother, Georgie meets Eve who regales her with stories about her time in Russia. Intrigued by the newcomer, she concocts a plan that will take her to the nursing home whenever possible. It also allows her to think of extraordinary ways to try and put together the money for her dancing lessons.
Though things never quite go the way she wants them to, Georgie doesn’t let that fact deter from her goals. Somehow, she’s going to find a way to get her heart’s desire. Ballet is something she must do whenever possible. With Eve’s stories as inspiration, she soon embarks on a quest to achieve what she sets her mind on. A quest that will open her mind to the world around her, giving her the needed push to strive for her dreams in more ways than one.
A truly delightful story, Pie and Other Brilliant Ideas is sure to capture your attention from the moment you begin reading. Karen immerses us in Georgie’s plight as she tries to settle in to her new home. The girl misses dancing and her best friend, doing everything possible to make do with the unexpected circumstances. She finds solace in her pie-making, never once imagining that such a simple thing could bring unexpected outcomes. I can certainly see this story turning into a series. Definitely looking forward to more of Georgie in the future.
Ballet and baking pies – these are two of twelve year old Georgie Harris’ favorite things. When her parents decide to move closer to her grandmother’s nursing home, Georgie quickly learns the bad news: dance lessons are too expensive in this new town.
Georgie spends most of her time baking pies to bring to her grandmother at the Willow Lakes Nursing Home. There she meets Eve, who inspires Georgie with stories of having danced with a world famous Russian ballerina many years ago.
As Georgie and Eve’s friendship evolves, their tales intertwine in this feel good story showing dreams really can come true.
