Review: My Familiar Stranger – Victoria Danann
Elora Laiken has led a privileged life. She’s enjoyed her freedom and loves her family dearly. She has everything she’s ever asked for and is content with the life she leads. Yet when a group of assassins storms her family’s quarters, her entire life changes within the blink of an eye.
Pushed against her will into a portal leading into another dimension, Elora ends up on Earth in a very sorry state. Her trip through the portal has literally flayed her alive and deposited her smack dab into the middle of a secret society no one has ever heard about. Her captors, if you can call them that, aren’t sure as to what to do with her. They’re not even sure if the mass sitting in the middle of the room is human. Never-the-less, they’re willing to give her the benefit of a doubt in order to find out who she is and what she’s doing there.
The road to recovery is anything but easy. She needs to heal completely before she can even think about where she is and what the secret society wants to do with her. She’s grateful to the gorgeous man who came to her aid when she needed it the most and feels she owes him her life for what he’s done for her. Little does she know, there’s more than one person waiting in the trenches in hopes of making her his, once and for all.
When it becomes apparent that Elora possesses super-human strength, the society takes it upon itself to hone her skills. She’s beautiful and brazen and she just may be a wonderful asset to the company. She’s more than eager to show them what she’s got as she’s ready to take her new life by it’s very horns in order to make the most of it. But first, she must show them she’s capable of gaining their trust in hopes of making that happen.
Torn between what she feels for Storm and Ram, Elora begins to wonder if any one of them can truly make her happy. Her experiences with love were anything but ideal and it’s put her off men completely. Or so she thought. Yet when her inner desires are awakened so unexpectedly, she surmises that love just may be a possibility if she allows herself to experience it.
Battling their attentions, she immerses herself in the world she’s now created. She’s willing to give her suitors as much of her time as possible, if they’re willing to give her the space she so deserves. The society decides to test her mettle in hopes of truly seeing what it that she can do. Her life takes unexpected turn when she’s abducted in the midst of an assignment and it’s up to her to try and get herself out of the situation she now finds herself. The question is, can she do just that before her life becomes forfeit, once and for all?
A far as portal stories goes, this one definitely began with a bang. The story immerses the reader from the get-go and keeps their attention glued with every turn of the page. I think Victoria did a lovely job in creating both the parallel universe and the one Elora finds herself in after she’s unceremoniously shoved into the portal.
I’ve always wondered if the possibility of parallel universes does exist. It’s one thing we’ll never truly now, but we can definitely hypothesize theories of, right? A truly intriguing and very endearing read, My Familiar Stranger, is a book any one of any age will definitely enjoy. I look forward to catching up on more of the series soon.
Minutes ahead of inevitable assassination, Elora Laiken is forcibly transported to an alternate dimension similar, but not identical, to her own. She is stranded. Alone. Far from home. A stranger in a “strangish” land.
Of course a girl could suffer worse problems than having gorgeous suitors. Perhaps more importantly, in the midst of an epidemic of vampire related abductions, can she stay alive long enough to choose between an honor debt, true love, or the breathlessness of single-minded passion?
My Familiar Stranger is a full length, stand alone, Paranormal Romance novel that also sets up the foundation for the Black Swan series. It is loved by fans of paranormal romance, fantasy romance, and urban fantasy.
Erotica quotient: A few steamy scenes. No menage. No BDSM.
About The Author:
For the past thirteen years, Victoria has illustrated and authored Seasons of the Witch calendars and planners.
Though works of fiction are a departure for her, she has had this series simmering on the back burner of her mind for years. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch, she plays rock music and manages one of Houston’s premier R&B/Variety/Pop bands.
This series will include some of my actual experience in the paranormal with fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing “metaphysician”, but most of the material is fantasy.
