KD BC Ever since she lay eyes on him, Shawn has been the one Ronnie Bird has pledged her love to for the rest of her life. He was charming and considerate and wooed her with just the right words. She promised him forever, told him she’d love him no matter what. Yet everything changed the day his parents decided they’d pack up and leave town.

Devastated, yet optimistic about not having Shawn near, Ronnie is still content to remain in contact with him. She yearns for the day when she can see him again and holds the memory of him deep within her heart. Immersing herself in her studies and giving most of her time to her two best friends, Mindy and Luke, she’s grateful for the bounties she has within her life each and every day.

When Shawn comes back to town, she comes to the realization that he’s a little different than he was before he left. Yet she’s determined not to let that fact get in the way of their picking up where they left off. In her mind, his parent’s incessant arguing is stressing Shawn in more ways than one and she’s willing to forgive him the little trespasses he’s committed, here and there.

As Shawn’s outbursts escalate, he starts lashing out at Ronnie in unimaginable ways. Deep inside, she can’t fault him for what he’s done and attributes his actions to what he’s going through back home. She loves him dearly and is willing to set a blind eye to the pain he’s causing her. When her best friend, Luke, starts to notice the bruises and her slight change of behavior, he questions her as to what’s going on. Ronnie, on the other hand, isn’t willing to tell him. At least, not yet.

As she starts spending more time with Luke, she finds herself feeling things for him she never thought she’d feel. Torn by what she feels for Shawn, she tells herself that things with her best friend can never be. Yet there’s no denying the stirrings of her heart and it clearly tells her Luke means more to her than she’s willing to admit. The lines between her and Shawn become quite muddied and blurred to the point where she no longer knows what’s right or wrong, thus leaving her bereft as to what she must do. She knows she must reconcile her feelings for Shawn and those she feels for Luke before something else happens. The question is, who will she ultimately choose?

I’ve just got say, WOW. I found myself having a hard time putting the book down once I got started reading. Jolene has crafted a very believable world touching on the subject of domestic abuse, young love, and the pain and heartache that ensues when her main character allows herself to believe that her boyfriend will stop hurting her in the end. I think this is something anyone can relate to and I commend Jolene for creating a very thought-provoking book. Beautifully written, this book is definitely anyone of any age will enjoy reading.

Synopsis:

Shawn is the guy Ronnie Bird promised her life to at the age of fourteen. He’s her soul mate. He’s more uptight every day, but it’s not his fault. His family life is stressful, and she’s adding to it. She just needs to be more understanding, and he’ll start to be the boy she fell in love with. She won’t give up on someone she’s loved for so long.

Luke is her best friend, and the guy she hangs with to watch girlie movies in her large blanketopias. He’s the guy she can confide in before she even goes to her girlfriends, and the guy who she’s playing opposite in Romeo and Juliet. Now her chest flutters every time he gets too close. This is new. Is Ronnie falling for him? Or is Juliet? The lines are getting blurry, but leaving one guy for another is not something that a girl like Ronnie does.

Shawn’s outbursts are starting to give her bruises, and Luke’s heart breaks as Ronnie remains torn. While her thoughts and feelings swirl around the lines between friendship and forever, she’s about to lose them both.
