Review: Give Me Reason – Zoey Derrick
Vivienne Callahan’s life has never been easy. For as long as she can remember, she’s had to make do with the little she’s had. Her mother hasn’t made things easy either. Granted, she’s now sober and a recovering drug addict, but that doesn’t change the fact that she’s made her daughter’s life difficult.
Still reeling from her ex-boyfriend’s recent abuse, Vivienne is determined in trying to put her life back together. She’s been given a second chance, and she wants nothing more than to make something of herself. That’s easier said than done, of course, but she’s willing to give things all she’s got. She now has another mouth to feed, something she never thought possible. While her situation hasn’t changed much, she knows she’ll need to do everything possible to survive. She refuses to go down without a fight, a fact she makes known to those around her whenever possible.
Her life takes a different turn when she meets the gorgeous and quite enigmatic Mikah Blake. She’s piqued his interest, although she can’t quite understand why. His insistence in wanting to help is a tad unnerving, something she can’t quite accept. Why should she? She’s gone through things no one should ever experience. Trusting someone is definitely out of the question.
Immersing herself in what she calls life, Vivienne does her best to ignore Mikah at every turn. She wants nothing to do with him, nor does she want his help. Unfortunately, she has no choice in the matter. He’s determined in helping her at every turn, even if she doesn’t want it. Though she won’t admit it, Mikah is her saving grace. The fact that he’s done so much for her in so short a time cements that with a certainty. Yet she knows that all good things are too good to be true. Most especially when her ex-boyfriend is still lurking in the shadows.
Give Me Reason is the start of a very promising series. I’ve been hooked from the beginning. Zoey has taken a very controversial topic, that of domestic abuse, and has told a story that anyone can relate to. Be it man or woman. Let’s face it, this kind of harsh treatment extends to either sex, and it’s never pretty. Some survive. Some do not. Others like to pretend that the pain and heartache caused by the those they’ve loved doesn’t exist. It’s their way of coping.
In this book, we meet Vivienne, head-strong and self-sufficient, though not without difficulty. She’s determined in making a new life for herself and the baby she carries. Though she cannot forget the pain she’s suffered, she’ll do anything to change the way her life is going. Granted, accepting an outsider’s help is hard to come by, but sometimes we need to do what we have to do in order to survive. I can’t wait to read what happens next in this wonderful series.
Vivienne Callahan has known only hardship. As if growing up with an alcoholic, drug addicted mother wasn’t traumatic enough, she’s escaped from her physically and verbally abusive boyfriend only to struggle every day to make ends meet as a waitress in a Minneapolis diner.
Along comes Mikah Blake, a handsome stranger who quickly takes an unexpected and persistent interest in her. On the surface, “Mr. Suit” seems to be Vivienne’s opposite: rich, well-fed, successful. As Vivienne will learn, Mikah is more than he seems, and for reasons unknown, he’s determined to be her knight in shining armor. But after having finally found her own two feet after years of abuse, it’s difficult for her to accept Mikah’s help.
Will her body’s unexpected response to Mikah’s touch be reason enough to overcome her pride and traumatic past and learn to love and trust? Or will her past, refusing to be left behind, come back to claim her?
