Review: Falling: Girl With Broken Wings – J. Bennett
An ordinary day with her boyfriend turns into a nightmare from which Maya may never wake. He’s now dead, and she’s been injected with a serum that burns through her veins, filling her body with an unbearable pain. She’s not quite sure as to why her unknown assailant has singled her out, yet something deep inside tells her there’s more to the situation than meets the eye.
When salvation comes at the hands of two unexpected strangers, Maya is grateful for the rescue, albeit a tad reluctantly. Her world has been turned topsy-turvy, and her body is now changing in more ways than one. Gabe and Tarren have a suitable explanation as to what’s going on inside of her, but they’re not as forthcoming as she thought they’d be. Still, despite the changes running rampant through her body, they’re willing to give her the benefit of a doubt in hopes of discovering a cure for whatever’s wrong with her.
Maya soon discovers that the pair are not only her half-brothers, but they’re also determined to put a stop to her father’s shenanigans. All her life, she’d thought she was an orphan, a child left behind by parents who didn’t want her. To finally know that things are quite different than what she’s believed for so long throws her completely for a loop. Never-the-less, she’s willing to give things with her new siblings a shot, but only if they’ll do the same for her.
As the changes within her continue to accelerate, Maya soon begins to accept her new lot in life. While the entire situation may have been forced upon her, she knows it’s possible to use her abilities for the greater good. She just needs to control her abilities a little better. Trusting herself and her brothers might be a little hard to come by, but deep inside she knows it’s possible. Her goal is to do away with her father, once and for all, something she hopes to make happen sometime in the near future. But first, she must contend with accepting who and what she’s now becomes in hopes of learning everything she needs to know in so short a time.
I honestly enjoyed the unique twist to the angelic side of this story. At first, I thought it was going to be one of those angels versus devil sort of thing, but man, am I glad it turned out completely different. I found myself engrossed in Maya’s story, and learning more about her and her dysfunctional family. Ryan’s unexpected death was heartbreaking, though, but it does add that missing element to driving Maya to do what she does. I look forward to reading more of this series soon.

The intellectual challenge of college and the warm embrace of a serious boyfriend have given Maya the wings she needs to break away from her bookish and shy reserve. Her ideal life comes crashing down when she and her boyfriend are accosted by a stranger. A stranger with glowing hands.
Maya’s boyfriend is killed. She is kidnapped. Changed.
A rescue comes, but not soon enough.
Maya’s senses sharpen, her body becomes strong and agile, and she develops the ability to visually see the emotions of those around her as colorful auras…beautiful auras…tempting auras.
And then there’s the song…
Now, Maya must struggle to control the murderous appetite that fuels her new abilities, accept her altered condition and learn to trust two vigilante half-brothers she never knew she had. As she joins the battle against a secret network of powerful and destructive beings that call themselves “Angels”, Maya vows to find and destroy the one who changed her.
On the bright side, at least Maya’s oldest half-brother has stopped trying to kill her.
