Review: Ever Near – Melissa MacVicar
Sixteen-year-old Jade Irving would love to pretend that her life is going exactly as she wants it to. That nothing in her short life is amiss. Sadly, she knows that’s not possible. You see, she has a secret. She can see and talk to ghosts, something she wishes weren’t a reality. Deep inside, she’d love to get rid of the ability to see them, but she’s not exactly sure how to do just that.
Moving in with her new family into the Fair-Ever plantation, Jade hopes that things will change for her. That the ghosts she’s sees will leave her alone, once and for all. She knows that way of thinking is just wishful thinking, but there’s no harm in wanting everything to be normal, is there?
When an unexpected brush with a new ghost sends her over the edge, Jade begins to wonder if she’ll ever have a normal life again. The ghost is insistent on making her see things her way. Something, sadly, she’s not exactly sure she wants to do. She knows there’s something the ghost wants, but she’s not exactly sure as to what that could be. Never-the-less, she’ll do everything she can to bring the ghost a little closure. Granted, doing so is a little mind-boggling, but she can at least try to give her the peace she so deserves.
Determined to hang on to what little is left of her sanity, Jade confides in the one person she believes will have a little faith in her – her step-brother, Charlie. While he’s not exactly sure as to what to make of her current predicament, he’s willing to give her the benefit of a doubt. After all, he has a few secrets of his own. If they’re to succeed in vanquishing the spirit, they’ll need to learn everything about her in so short a time. The question is, how can they do so without alerting people’s suspicions in the first place?
An intriguing tale, Ever Near is one of those stories that will boggle your mind, and leave you wondering as to whether this is just a story or something more. As a lover of all things supernatural, Ever Near captured my attention as I dove into Jade’s world. I honestly believe in the world Melissa has painted around her beloved characters. Not because she’s penned such a thrilling story, but rather because I, too, in real life see ghosts. Granted, I can’t hear them, but I do see them. I definitely know where Melissa’s characters are coming from. A wild supernatural ride, Ever Near is a story that will definitely have you questioning what is real and what not. I enjoyed the story immensely.
