#Review: Devil Music – Carly Orosz
For as long as he can remember, Cain has lived a miserable existence. His life has been full of pain, heartache, and darkness. Forced to do his master’s bidding each and every day, that’s the life he’s always known. Everything he does is meant to please his master, to give the man the satisfaction of knowing that he does exactly as ordered. Deep inside, he wishes he could be free of it all. That he could do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted to. Sadly, he knows that will never be. Until the moment he comes across an electric guitar. It’s then his entire life changes.
Cain’s life soon takes a turn for the better. He’s discovered his penchant for creating music, and is determined in harnessing his new talent to the best of his ability. Garnering himself a band, he soon embarks on an incredible journey that will test his mettle in a myriad of ways. He finally has what he’s wanted the most, including the beautiful Michelle as his girlfriend. In his mind, he’s saved her from an impending doom, and he’ll do everything possible to protect her. She’s caught his heart in the most unexpected of ways. There’s no way he’s going to let her come to harm.
As tensions rise in the world around him, Cain soon realizes that everything comes with a price. His heart’s desires are soon put to the test. A series of murders soon crop up around him, and he and his band are soon implicated. Though they are innocent, they’ll do all they can to find out who the killer is. Deep inside, he knows that finding out who’s committing the heinous acts is going to take some doing. He’s determined to do so, nonetheless. As the secrets of his past soon come to light, he comes to the realization that there’s more at stake than he knew. Still, he refuses to allow someone else wreak havoc on the world as he knows it. Somehow, someway, he will set all wrongs to right, no matter the painful outcome.
This is honestly quite an intriguing book. Quite controversial, it delves into the darker side of our beliefs, showing us the world through a demon’s eyes. While most of us believe that Hell is bad, that it’s a place we end up at to atone for our sins in the worse of ways, Carly has shown us that it’s not much different from the world as we know it. In a metaphorical sense, of course. It’s painstakingly apparent just how much research has gone into the creation of this book. It’s a well-crafted universe, based on religious beliefs, but told from a different perspective to help us understand what life for those coming from the underworld is like alongside the word itself.
Cain has been bound to darker forces, pushed in a direction he has no wish to go. Unfortunately, it’s the way of things, and he can’t free himself until he comes across that guitar. It’s then that the forces of good and evil are pitted against one another in the hopes of becoming the victor in a war as old as time. The war between good and evil is never-ending. Carly makes that apparent throughout the book itself. Sometimes, though, there’s always a silver-lining. You just have to believe you can reach it. No matter what side you fight for, that happy-ending is always there. Definitely a different, but very unique and intriguing read, Devil Music will take you for a ride in every way possible.
