Review: Come What May – Faith Sullivan
Ever since Katie, the young woman he’d met at the scene of accident, died in his arms, Adam’s life has never been the same. He vividly recalls the moment whenever he has a chance to. Katie’s face invades his dreams, and haunts his every breath. Deep inside, he wants to believe that he’s just feeling guilty over the fact that she died on his watch. Yet he knows better. Something else is going on. He just can’t figure out what that is yet.
Determined to try and pick up the pieces of his life, Adam immerses himself in his work. Granted, it does nothing to lessen the pain he feels inside, but he’ll do anything to forget about Katie’s death by whatever means necessary. Saddled with a new partner on the job, he does his best to ignore Jada at every turn. Everything about her reminds him of Katie, something he wishes fervently wasn’t the case. Though he knows he should treat her with the respect she deserves. He can’t. He’s still hurting over the one person he never thought he’d feel something for.
Despite his refusal to allow Jada into the confines of his heart, his mind and body have other ideas. She slowly starts to mean something to him, much to his chagrin. He’s not exactly sure as to how he should feel about the situation. She’s beautiful and brazen, and she stirs his heart in ways he’s never imagined. So much so, that at times he’s able to forget about the fact that Katie’s memory haunts him. If he’s to succeed in having something worthwhile with her, he’ll need to confront the demons that insist on wreaking havoc on his life. To do that, he’ll need to be honest with himself about what truly happened to Katie. Only then can he find the peace within himself to give things with Jada the chance they so deserve.
Another heart-wrenching story, Come What May takes up where Heartbeat left off. We find ourselves smack-dab in the middle of Adam’s hectic life. He’s a man hell-bent on forgetting about the past. A man haunted by the memory of a girl who’s come to mean a lot to him in so short a time. Faith has done a great job in filling us in with what’s happened to Adam since the end of book one. She’s given us a look at a man who’s doing his best to live his life as each day comes. A bittersweet story, Come What May, is one of those stories that will pull you in, and keep your attention glued to every page. You’ll definitely want to read it time and again.
Adam is through with love.
He unravels blaming himself for what happened with Katie.
His final moments with her echo through his nightmares.
She owns him body and soul.
To dull the pain, Adam invites a string of women into his bed. Fueled by alcohol and desperation, his meaningless hook-ups provide little comfort. When he closes his eyes, it’s Katie he sees.
The only one who helps to ease his guilt somewhat is Jada. But as his new ambulance partner, Adam considers her off limits. He doesn’t want to get seriously involved with anyone, much less her. Yet he can’t stop fantasizing about the feel of her caramel skin against his.
Despite his intentions, Adam’s bond with Jada deepens as they respond to a series of emotional calls. Their mutual attraction becomes undeniable. But how can he give his heart to Jada when it still belongs to Katie?
