#Review: Branded – Abi Ketner & Missy Kalicicki
Branded a fallen woman, Lexi Hamilton has had to deal with quite a bit in so short a time. Thrown into the Hole, she knows it’s a place she may never get out of. Death is a certainty there, most especially now that she’s been branded with the sign of the mighty sin, Lust. Deep inside, she knows she never committed the sin she’s been blamed for. She’s innocent in every way possible, though she has no way of proving it.
Determined to overcome the adversity headed her way, Lexi gives in to what will now be her new life. Her cards have been dealt, and she must come to terms with how things are now. Doing so, sadly, is difficult. The denizens of the Hole see her as some sort of commodity. She must be possessed, and they’ll do everything possible to obtain her. To her surprise, however, her safety is guaranteed. She’s been assigned a guard, though she doesn’t understand the why of it. Still, if it means that she’ll survive another day, she’ll take whatever reprieve she can get.
Giving in to her pain, Lexi soon comes to the realization that her life will never be what she wants it to be. There’s a lot of strife going on around her, and there’s nothing she can do to change her circumstances. Her only saving grace comes in the guise of her guard, Cole. He’s intent on keeping her safe at all cost, and for that she’s grateful. Still, his doing so doesn’t change how things really are. If they’re to survive in the cruel world they now live in, they’ll need to trust in each other. The question is, how can they do so when everything they know changes by the second?
Bittersweet and very heart-wrenching, Branded is a story that will get under your skin and stay there. The story touches on subjects that are difficult to talk about. The authors have tastefully woven these topics in such a way that don’t detract from the story. In a sense, they enhance it in order to give the reader a more thorough and vivid look of the world they’ve created. This is definitely a great start to this series, and I look forward to more to to come.
Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.
Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.
Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.
Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.
The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.
