ARSL BCDissatisfied with the life she leads, Veronica flits from place to place without caring about the consequences of her actions. She dives head-first into tumultuous relationships, thinking they’ll assuage her of the guilt she feels inside. Sadly, nothing she seems to do fils the void inside of herself. Deep inside, she knows she needs to atone for her sins. Unfortunately, doing so isn’t something she’s keen on doing anytime soon.

Determined to make the most of the situations she finds herself in, Veronica promises herself that she won’t allow the surrounding darkness to claim her. She knows she’s done wrong, that she needs to fix the little things somehow. Yet she can’t find it within herself to straighten herself out. She’s trudged down the current path she’s been on for far too long.

The descent into pain, pleasure, and drugs is all she’s ever known. Part of her knows that if she’s to succeed into setting all wrongs to right, she’ll need to take her past and her sins into consideration. Too many people have been hurt along the way. Though that’s something she can’t quite fix, she’ll do anything to find balance in the sordid world she lives. Granted, that’s easier said than done, but she refuses to fall prey to the demons she’s unleashed within her.

As her life continues to spiral out of control, Veronica soon realizes just how far she’s fallen. Anything and everything around her is slowly breaking, and there’s nothing she can to do to stop them from doing so. By alienating those who should have meant the most to her, she soon sees that a helping hand is truly hard to find. The only way for her to find redemption is by owning up to her mistakes. The question is, how can she do that when she’s been so broken from the get-go?

A thought-provoking tale, A River So Long immerses us in the hectic life of a character named Veronica. The story flits through different time frames, giving us a glimpse into who and what she is. We get to see her opened up completely as she struggles through her daily life. Vallie has given us a refreshing tale where despite the adversities the main character finds herself in, she finally makes the effort to do what she believes in. In the end, it might not be what people think she should do, but she comes out strong, regardless. Bittersweet, this is a story anyone will definitely relate to.

About the book: Vallie Lynn Watson’s debut novel follows thirty-something Veronica as she jolts between five-star hotels in New Orleans, New York, and the North Carolina coast. Veronica’s business keeps her on the move, and further strains her relationships with the already unsuitable men she’s met along the way, not to mention her blink-and-you-miss-him husband. A River So Long, like Veronica’s life, is a fragmented conflation of time, place, and people-she’s a gypsy, and the world she inhabits is, if not blurry, at least kaleidoscopic. This remarkable novel reads like Jean Rhys run over by the twenty-first century-a rushing, threatening, constantly changing scene with a tumultuous, multiplying cast
