Review: A Bandit’s Broken Heart – Michelle McLean
Brynne Richardson’s life has taken a different turn. She is now a respectable lady living in the lap of luxury in beautiful Boston. Though she yearns for the excitement of her previous life, she knows it’s one she can’t return to. She now has a little girl to take care of, one whose life she must protect at all cost.
Still smarting from the death of her husband, Brynne is determined to give life as a respectable woman a good shot for her daughter’s sake. Granted, not everything is going to plan. She’s not quite accepted by society, and sometimes feels like an outcast. Never-the-less, she’s unwilling to give things up without a fight for what she believes in.
Determined to make the situation more manageable than it’s been, Brynne appeals to the local doctor in the hopes that he’ll allow her to work for him. Unfortunately, Dr. Richard Oliver isn’t that forthcoming. In his mind, he thinks she’s just another rich woman looking for a way to get out of her obligations. Yet when she makes it clear that she’s not just another pretty face, he has no other option but to concede that she really is good at what she does.
When the small clinic is broken into, and the meager supplies disappear, Brynne soon realizes that there is more at stake than she ever thought possible. In order to save the clinic and those who need the precious medicine that’s been stolen, she’ll need to unleash her past persona. One she never thought would see the light of day ever again. Still, she knows coming out of the woodwork is a necessity if she’s to succeed in bringing hope back to the town itself. Yet there’s one thing she didn’t count on – her attraction to Richard, and the fact that her beloved her secret lies in the palm of his hand.
This is one of those books that draws you in from the very beginning. The action starts from page one, and doesn’t let go until the very end. Even then, you want to keep on reading. Michelle has penned such a bittersweet story set in the heart of Boston during a time when gunslingers and bounty hunters roamed the wilds in search of ways to make their lives a better place.
I was drawn to Brynne from the very beginning, and found her to be a touching soul whose only wish is to do good in the world she lives in. Yet not everything falls into place for her. She has her up’s and down’s just like any other person, and makes do with the little she has with her. This is a great addition to the Blood Blade Sisters series. I aim to catch up on book one soon enough, and look forward to more when the time comes.
