#Read An #Excerpt From Iocasta’s Reprieve
Staring down into the baby’s face, Iocasta knew she couldn’t do as her half-brother asked of her. She couldn’t kill the child she’d carried for the past nine months. Deep inside, she knew Hektos was aware of that fact, too.
Her mind traveled to that sordid night. She wondered what she’d done to incite Hektos’ wrath. Yet nothing substantial came to mind. The night had been like any other, full of drinks, food, and rambunctious camaraderie between herself and her brethren. She and Bakasha, the Goddess of Solace, had been inseparable for most of the evening at the wedding reception. Her cousin had spent a better part of the night comforting her, though she couldn’t remember as to why. Granted, that was Bakasha’s role in the scheme of things, to give comfort and console those who needed it. A role, she realized, Bakasha took seriously.
Pressing the sleeping baby to her chest, Iocasta kissed his brow once more. She bit her lower lip to keep the cry rising to the surface from spilling past her lips. It pained her to know that she’d agreed to Hektos’ request so long ago. Back then, she’d thought she could do as he’d asked. Now, she wasn’t sure she could go through with things.
Her eyes closed as she held the child against her. Hot tears streamed down her cheeks as she rocked herself back and forth. Iocasta’s shoulders shook as she gave in to her sorrow. The pain and heartache she’d been experiencing for so long erupted within her. A strangled cry broke free, reverberating throughout the dark forest. She scrunched her eyes closed even tighter. Allowing herself to remember that night, she knew, then, that everything would soon change in more ways than one.
Iocasta has a secret. One, she’s loath to reveal.
It’s no secret that Iocasta Meldren is the apple of her father’s eye. As the Goddess of Life and Love, she’s lived a very privileged life. For as long as she can remember, she’s basked in the adoration of those who follow her, an adoration she makes the most of.
A chance encounter one fateful night robs her of that which she holds the most dear. She’d give anything to hold tight to the remnants of her broken innocence. She’s lived with the repercussions of that night since then, praying that no one learns of her precious secret. Deep inside, she wishes she could keep the life she’s now entrusted with.
Iocasta knows her time is running short. The wolf hovers at her door, ready to release her from the burden she now bears. If she’s to succeed in holding fast to the one thing she loves the most, she’ll need to devise a plan to keep her enemy at bay. Her precious bundle must be protected, at all cost. The question is, how can she do just that when there’s no one trustworthy around to give her the helping hand she so clearly needs?
