Guest Post: Inspirations For The Soul Mates Series By Elizabeth A. Lance
Someone asked me recently, what inspired me to write the Soul Mates series. So I sat down and thought about it and I came to realize that several things brought the series together for me.
I have to give some credit to Twilight. I must admit I’m a fan. I’ve been writing for a long time, but Twilight inspired me to write Young Adult fiction. I really wanted to write a series that boys might enjoy too. So the first two books of the series feature strong young adult males as the leads. With book 1, Scent, Max Fergus reminded me of the all American boy, the kind of boy every girl dreams of dating. Everyone loves him. Of course no one is perfect, so Max has a flaw or two, he’s over-protective and a bit demanding at times, but Anna knows just how to handle him. With book 2, Bewitched, it felt only natural to write about Tony Gunari, Max’s best friend, who seemed to have a lot of secrets. Tony is a sweetheart, the strong and silent type. And when he meets the girl of his dreams, sparks fly. I’m currently working on book 3, Magic, which will feature Abbey, Max’s little sister as the main character, however as with books 1 and 2, you’ll get to see a great deal of sword play, magic, many of your favorite characters from the previous books as well as a few new ones.
Music is also something that I use to inspire me when I write. However what I listen to varies, depending on the main character. With Max, I listened to a lot of older rock, U2, The Verve, Oasis, the Gin Blossoms and a few other bands. However, with Tony, I leaned more toward Glam rock, Pop and Alternative. He seemed to prefer Adam Lambert, The Killers, Berlin, Muse, and Katy Perry. Now with Abbey, she is much more eclectic. I’ve listened to a lot of Pussy Cat Dolls, Haley Westerna, Adele, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga and oddly enough, The Hex Girls. As you can tell, I have a very diverse collection of music to choose from!
The landscape of Scent was easy for me to write, it’s based around Southern Indiana, which is where I live, so I had a lot of things to draw on, which inspired me and made the story come to life. Bewitched was a little harder, as most of the story is based in New York City with a few jumps over to Ireland, two places that I have longed to visit, but so far, I haven’t made it there. I relied heavily on maps and photos and Satellite images of the streets and park. I hope I did their beauty justice. Magic brings us back to Southern Indiana, with a great deal of time spent in Faerie and the Never Never.
While some of the characteristics of my characters were inspired by friends, family and acquaintances, I think they really become their own people in my head. They speak to me and drive the story. Sometimes, they surprise me and I look back at what I’ve written and know that they inspire to be more like them, strong and full of life and to live and love with all of my heart.
I hope you enjoyed getting to know a little bit about the Soul Mates Series, the characters and me. I loved to hear from you if you have any questions, comments or just want to share your love for the series.
