Another Excerpt From The Secret Keeper
Another tidbit from my CampNaNoWriMo project, The Secret Keeper. Enjoy!
He stood in the shadows, his shoulder-length dark-brown hair fluttering softly as a slight breeze blew around him. He leaned against the side of the building, his brow furrowed as he watched the object of his affections pull the edges of her sweater close. A shiver ran down her body as she gazed up at starless sky.
She was beautiful, the silken strands of her auburn hair softly framing her oval face. Her scent, a mix of gardenia and roses, wafted in his direction, reminding him of what he’d lost so long ago. She stood upon the balcony of her apartment, her face devoid of emotion.
Julian wondered as to what she was thinking about as she stared up at heavens. He craved to hold her, to soothe away her fears. Yet he knew such a thing was now forbidden to him. The soft leather jacket he wore crinkled slightly as he shoved his hands into his pockets and shifted from foot to foot.
He scooted further into the shadows as she swung about to gaze in his direction. It was if she’d heard him move so unexpectedly. But that’s not possible, he thought. There’s no way she could have heard me, much less have seen me. Unless . . .
As if she’d answered his question, Lorelei Sweeney materialized before him. Afraid to move, he drew upon the power coiled deep within him and shifted into a cloud of smoky particles. A slight mist now hung in the air where he’d stood moments ago.
Before he had a chance to move out of the vicinity, she reached out and pushed her hand into the center of the mist. The particles of his essence wavered as his body began to take on his human form once more. Bewildered, he stared down at the dainty hand that was now pressed against his naked chest.
“What the hell?” he cursed, concentrating on the elements around him and willed his clothes to reappear upon his body.
She smiled with satisfaction and said, “Blessed be, my beloved Julian.”
“H – How did you do that?”
She stared up at him as her smile grew wider. “I, too, have secrets.”
